The History of our Italian Restaurant in New Orleans
Carmelo Chirico, the owner and proprietor of Dantes Pizzeria and Ristorante Carmelo, is a native of Calabria in southern Italy. An expert with gourmet Italian food and wine, Carmelo has created an authentic Italian restaurant in the heart of Cajun Creole country. Visitors to the French Quarter and locals alike have indulged in Italian delights for over a decade.
Carmelo came from Italy to New York in 1970 and attended school
at Syracuse University for a short time. During the next five years,
he worked at local restaurants and pizzerias.
Then in 1975, Carmelo opened San Marco Restaurant and Pizzeria
in Syracuse, NY. Soon thereafter he opened two Pavones Restaurants,
one in Utica, NY and one in Old Forge, NY.
After having much success with these endeavors, Carmelo decided
to travel to Louisiana to expand his businesses.
He started twenty -three years ago in 1978 with the opening of
Dantes Pizza and expanded it to over twenty restaurants in five
states. After the sale of the Dantes franchise units, Carmelo renovated
the historic Vieux Carre Restaurant on Bourbon Street.
Not long afterward Carmelo completed the beautiful renovation of
his namesake restaurant, Ristorante Carmelo. Ristorante Carmelo
is located in a historic building on the corner of Toulouse Street
and Decatur, in the heart of the French Quarter in New Orleans,
which was built in 1796. The restaurant renovation was finished
in 1989, and the result is the well known romantic restaurant that
graces the French Quarter today.
